The Future of College Libraries

Today I spoke to a group of librarians from Udayana University at the new campus at Bukit Jimbaran Badung, near Denpasar about the future of libraries. Here is my PowerPoint. No surprises here for anyone who has talked to me about the future of libraries recently.

The librarians' questions were good and perceptive. They were particularly interested in embedded library instruction, partnerships with faculty, library automation, the library as place, and working conditions for U.S. librarians.

Jaya took this picture of us all with his iPhone.

Fantastic, Jonathan. Nice work! It's so exciting to see these connections being made. You guys look fabulous :-) Cross cultural librarians unite!

If you get a chance to visit the little local public library in Ubud next to the soccer field, it's worth it. But because there is no A/C, the continued life of books is tenuous. They do have a program encouraging kids to read and sponsor classes like Balinese dance, I think. Last year Hoyt and I found some typed up historical info on Bali stuffed in the back on the left in the "book lending" section. If you want a snack, they also have a little cafe.
