Our new furniture is here!

Over the last few months the new furniture we ordered has come to the Olin library. The rocking chairs are a real hit on the loggia (more are coming and should be here for the perfect porch weather of October.) The new furniture seems to be as big a hit on the inside. I have already seen people pausing by the table of new books located on a gorgeous rug that really warms up the lobby and I have heard good things from people lounging in the comfortable leather chairs that you can see in the background of this pic.

As I have noted before, this is just a test. We want to see what spaces people use and how they use them and then use that information to help make decisions about furniture and space elesewhere in the library. I hope this is just the beginning.

I love the comfy leather chairs, yay! Had a nice seat while Terry fixed my computer in the IT help desk, also it is way cool I could bring my drink in while I waited, you rock...

Hmm...okay, sitting in a rocking chair on a porch sounds nice, but I still don't understand having rocking chairs inside an academic library.

Kate, I am surprised by the comments on Flickr about the rocking chairs (unless I am missing the irony.) The ones at Rice are arranged in an unattractive way at least in this photo, but if some people find rocking chairs comfortable to read in, why not inside an academic library? I am not convinced that we have to be uncomfortable to be serious. I wonder if this link between hard chairs and hard library work comes from our roots in monastic libraries?
